Megachurches and Homosexuality September 22, 2007

Recent letters to the ST forum have placed the spotlight on the mega churches in Singapore. It all began with Dr Lee Bee Wah’s letter. In that letter (reproduced on KTM’s blog) Dr Lee talked about how a family member had become distant from them and how the family member had ignored her studies as a result of her new found faith. In response there were letters both defensive and otherwise.

This is rather interesting as it coincides with another issue; namely the spotlight on homosexuals. The spot light on homosexuals arose as a result of Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s comment that the unlamented Section 377A (or lamented; depends on whose perspective you come from) would have to go. This brought about a flurry of chest beating and cries from the fundamentalists ranging from academics and the common man in the street. Then you had the revocation of Prof. Douglas Sanders license to speak in Singapore, the ban of a picnic in the Botanic gardens, police filming a run at the Singapore river and Otto Fong’s coming out.

Of course it may seem as if there is no correlation between the church leaders and homosexuals; however if one would look at this letter by Derek Hong one would realise that the two related in more ways than one, so to speak.

Notwithstanding the usual misinformation inside the letter (how homosexuals want to influence society and all that crap), this letter highlights an interesting issue. I refer to the pastor’s line that “I have been reliably informed that NOW IS THE TIME TO SUBMIT OUR FEEDBACK. ” Indeed I do wonder who was the one doing the informing and whether the person is reliable a not. In a way this is similiar to the revocation of Douglas Sanders licence, where having been given the licence it was suddenly revoked as ” based on additional information received, police saw the event as ‘contrary to the public interest’. Then look again at Mr Alex Au’s post regarding the picnic.  This seems to suggest that the Christian right has friends in right places.

And if you look at the anecdotal evidence with regards to the prevalance of the megachurches, or take a walk to one of the places where these churches hold their regular services, then it can be seen that the possible influence of these organisations is vast indeed. While the situation in Singapore is by no means analagous to that in the United States, the fact that religious organisations are protected somewhat by the Sedition Act does make a situation possible. In fact on reading Derek Hong’s letter I was minded of an old historic event: The Council of Clermont. During the council Pope Urban II called for a crusade against the Saracens in the “Holy Land”, thus setting the stage for a violent confrontation between Islam and Christianity which does seem to continue on today. Derek’s attack on homosexuals seems to be no different from Pope Urban’s sermon at Clermont. And given the potential influence of these organisations, coupled with the support of friends in high places, there is a danger that if nothing is done to redress the evident imbalance between the homosexuals and conservatives in society, instances of discrimination could increase and Singapore’s progress could be stifled as a result.

There are many bones of contention; the above is merely a tip of the iceberg. Indeed in light of Derek’s letter I truly wonder how some can still talk about social responsibility when these organisations are actively trying to discriminate against fellow human beings; but of course perhaps I am unenlightened enough to comprehend the greater mysteries of life and what have you. Nevertheless there is one viable solution to be taken and that is to repeal that ridiculous law. However it appears that 377A will be here to stay, for now.

Just like to add that megachurches are a disgrace to christianity because of their over the top marketing, lack of respect for other religions and too centred on making money.

All I know is this if you blog against a church that is building a mall somewhere in BV, you will go to hell!

Just be careful, if you are really serious abt entering heaven. Even politicians, journalist and academics all have to play ball with this mega church, if you criticize them, you have have no pass to enter heaven.

So you want to go up or down?

That’s why no write up lah? Kelong lah!

Welcome lah the city of possibilities. Mr Brown asked a simple question why less $ is directed to those who need it most – the disable – he got a wall of silence and grunts.

Then here you have one mega church building shopping centers and again no one say anything.

What would the real Jesus have done? Would he have helped the disable girl or maybe he was too busy drafting tenancy agreeements?

Kelong! Welcome to the city of impossibilities where the road just goes in one round circle!

I just wonder where the funds come from in the first place. Is it a case of robbing Pauper to pay Peter? Do they get a subsidy from the Gahmen? Are we sure there is no hanky-panky like using the Church funds to enrich themselves just like the convicted priest ?

And if I am not wrong, I got this funny feeling that the Churches are trying to outbid each other in terms of size, facilities, etc. Just look at the rate they are re-building the new churches, truly in the spirit of competition. Is there a real need for the Churches to be commercialised ?

7. passerby - September 24, 2007

i must say it’s a clever move by the church. think about it, there are several advantages in collaborating with capitaland. for one, they won’t be able to buy that piece of prime land(next to mrt and all) even if they have the money( i supect they maybe an agenda from the higher stakeholder). secondly, the profits that would cover their expenses of course.
so it’s an expedient move on their part if you look from a business perspective.
however, and this will be shocking to most, the entire gospel has been fucked up. too long to write it out for it will probably require a book to do that.

Hmmm…@Flustered…I don’t think all megachurches are as you say they are. Because most megachurches are big(duh) you get an absolute larger number of *beep* Christians so more noticeable.
If you go to the small churches, and do percentage count, you will probably also see same percentage of *beep* Christians.
Anyway, it is not just Christians with friends in high places. I won’t be surprised if there are other groups with friends in said high places.
Lots of agendas are being pushed. Not just the fundamentalist Christian agenda.

the problem with the ‘church’ today, and has been for a very long time, is that she is suffering from tunnel vision. this vision is constricted by her leaders.

without understanding who her head is, the followers or the bride, will always be beholden to her husband( the head).

the curse of the first husband is that he gave in to what the bride or people wanted. the social contract between the leaders and people are bound by the laws they have created for themselves,

because they are earthly by nature, what was good, has been exploited to develop empires or in the words of the scriptures, kingdoms.this form of rule governs both the secular and religious world.

the remedy is to crush the head, which is the seat of authority, of the serpent. and thus, the new groom, second adam, bears the cross( his head was crushed by a CROWN of thorns ).

all followers are told to pick up that cross to follow him. its way, truth and life are against the spirit of this world. the world rules through the instrument of mammon. by submitting to the ways of mammon is to bear the beastly mark in your lives.

so in effect, mega churches are leading the people through the broad way.that’s the reason why they ‘balloon’ and gotten rich isn’t it? by the false teaching on ‘tithes’ and the promise of prosperity and ‘blessing’, many have been lulled into ‘dreamland’ or sleep.

when the church becomes a storehouse of worldly wealth( the sin is in SUBMITTING to the principles of worldly wealth), it inevitably becomes corrupt! the true church of god can never agree with the ways of the world. never. that’s the reason why it costs to follow jesus. that’s the reason why true believers will be persecuted in the world( and religious institutions).hence, the cross of christ is not about your financial troubles or why you fail to get that raise and so on per se. the cross separates the true followers from the false and they become another city – the city of light. this city is not ruled by mammon. this city is built from the inside out. unlike the kingdoms of man which rule from outside in, it is just, righteous and eternal.

and finally, read the whole text. the pursuit of riches IS the love of money and is the ROOT of ALL EVIL. these churches are singing the same tune as the world howbeit, in sugar coated biblical language that mostly originated from the decadent west!

the whole body of christ is deluded into thinking that with money, we can solve the ills of the world. so they wickedly reasoned, by giving to religious institutions(headed by false christ – christ means anointed), these monies will be expended for GOOD: helping the poor and needy or improving society etc.

far from it. why? because they miss the whole point of the KINGDOM OF GOD. the kingdom of God is AGAINST the kingdoms of the world( including religious institutions).

and because they miss the ROOT cause of the poor and the downtrodden in this world, the monies accumulated/used actually help to gain the rulers to obtain greater POWER and STANDING in the world( these power mongers, both secular and religious, also basked in the wealth and exploited the followers mostly – the good only justify or cover up their wicked indulgences).

folks, who suppressed the poor(on the contrary, they are not here to liberate THE CAPTIVES.go read it in the bible)? Is it not the KINGDOM OF MAN?

the irony of these churches, mega or not, they submitted to the kingdom of man to acquire these monies to help the poor WHEN THE CAUSE IS ACTUALLY THESE KINGDOMS OF MAN THAT HAS BEEN OPPRESSING THE POOR(or people) AND MADE THEM GREATER SINNERS AND THEREAFTER, SENDING THEM TO DEATH THROUGH THEIR LAWS!

and that’s why the ‘called out ones’ are to seek the KINGDOM OF GOD – NOT AIDING THE KINGDOM OF MAN – not more collection of funds and the use of these funds for good and thus, submitting to the ways of mammon!

otherwise, why did jesus bother to tell his disciples to SEEK and IMPLEMENT( no point seeking if you are not going to implement it) God’s kingdom? obviously, the current kingdom of man, ruled by the serpent, is not acceptable isn’t it?
